Lucerna

Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 9, 2026

Lucerna is built to be a quiet place — not a place that watches you back. This page explains, plainly, what that means in practice, including the one exception below: a small amount of anonymous usage data that helps us keep the app working well.

01The short version

Lucerna has no signup wall — it works instantly, with a silent, anonymous identifier backing up your reading progress. We use anonymous, aggregate analytics (Firebase Analytics) to see which features people use — never anything that identifies you.

What you type into "Before" is the one thing we draw a hard line around: it stays on your device, always. It is never sent anywhere, not even as part of anonymous analytics.

02What we don't collect

03"Before" — what you type never leaves your phone

Before's whole purpose asks you to be honest in a moment that's hard to be honest in. Whatever you type there — a temptation, a fear, a name — is matched to a verse entirely on your device. It is never sent to a server, never logged, never included in analytics, never seen by us, and never stored once you leave the screen. This is the one promise in this document we treat as absolute.

04Anonymous usage analytics

Lucerna uses Firebase Analytics, a service provided by Google, to understand which parts of the app are actually useful — for example, whether people use reading plans, or how often "Before" is opened. This data is aggregate and anonymous: it is never tied to your name or email, even if you've signed in with Apple.

We do collectWe do not collect
Screens viewed, features usedAnything you type, anywhere in the app
App version, device type, OS versionYour name, email, or phone number
Approximate, country-level locationPrecise location (GPS)
Crash and performance diagnosticsAdvertising identifiers (IDFA/GAID)

Firebase is not connected to Google Ads, and Lucerna does not request App Tracking Transparency permission — so this data cannot be used to advertise to you or to track you elsewhere. Google processes this data as Lucerna's service provider; their practices are described in the Google Privacy Policy.

05What lives on your device

Separately from analytics, a small amount of information is saved locally, using your phone's own storage, so the app remembers you between visits:

These same fields are also backed up under your anonymous identifier, so that if you sign in with Apple later, or use a new device, this progress isn't lost. Drafts you never save are not synced — only the items above.

06Signing in with Apple (optional)

You can optionally sign in with Apple to make sure your reading progress, plans, and preferences follow you to a new device. This is never required — the app works fully without it. Signing in links your existing anonymous progress to your Apple ID; nothing is lost or duplicated in the process.

If you choose "Hide My Email" during Sign in with Apple, we only ever see the private relay address Apple gives us, never your real one. You can sign out at any time from Settings, which simply starts a fresh anonymous identifier — your Apple-linked data remains safely under your Apple ID.

07The Bible text itself

Lucerna reads from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is dedicated to the public domain. The full text is bundled with the app, so reading works without an internet connection and without any request ever reaching a server.

08Sharing a verse

When you share a verse image, Lucerna builds that image on your device and hands it to your phone's own share sheet. What you do with it from there — post it, send it, save it — is between you and the app you chose. Lucerna itself never sees or stores what you share.

09Children's privacy

Lucerna collects no personal data from anyone, including children. The anonymous analytics described above are aggregate and are never used to identify or profile an individual user of any age.

10Changes to this policy

If a future version of Lucerna changes what data it collects, this page will be updated first, with a new "last updated" date above, before that change ships.
